US House of Representatives on 6 February rejected a Republican-led standalone Israel bill that would provide $17.6 billion in aid to Tel Aviv.
The bill failed to pass with a vote of 250 to 180, falling two-thirds short of what was needed. Democrats said they would rather vote on a broader measure that would include military assistance for Ukraine, humanitarian assistance for Palestinians in Gaza, funding for US border security, and aid for Taiwan. For his part, US President Joe Biden vowed to veto the bill if it reached his desk, which also swayed votes against the bill.
The Senate bill was “dead on arrival,” according to Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, who was forced to fast-track the motion due to opposition within his own party. On Tuesday, some representatives expressed their belief that the bill would not receive enough votes to pass.
“This accomplishes nothing, and delays aid getting out to our allies and providing humanitarian relief,” Representative Rosa DeLauro, the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, said. “Our allies are facing existential threats, and our friends and foes around the globe are watching, waiting to see how America will respond.”
If passed, the legislation would have sent $17.6 billion in military support to Israel, including $4 billion to replenish the Iron Dome and David Slingshot systems, $3.3 billion to support US military operations in the Arab region, and $200 million toward the protection of US citizens.
Democrat Representative Brad Sherman asked, “If you have a bill that has nothing in it except Israel, and it fails, what does that say to the rest of the world?”
Other Democrats, however, viewed the standalone aid bill for Israel as a political stunt by their Republican counterparts.
“Unfortunately, the standalone legislation introduced by House Republicans over the weekend, at the 11th hour without notice or consultation, is not being offered in good faith,” House Democratic minority leader Hakeem Jeffries wrote in a letter to colleagues.
The top three House Democrats also noted that “It is a nakedly obvious and cynical attempt by MAGA extremists to undermine the possibility of a comprehensive, bipartisan funding package that addresses America’s national security challenges in the Middle East, Ukraine, the Indo-Pacific region and throughout the world.”

Just yesterday, on the eve of the day in which the International Court in The Hague is called to address the accusation of genocide launched against Israel by South Africa, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken defined it as “meritless”, revealing his unremitting support for the massacre of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, CERTIFIED by indiscriminate bombing of hospitals and churches in Gaza.
We write without waiting for the start of the process which will first of all have to deal with the “precautionary measures of the immediate suspension of Israeli military operations” urgently requested by the South African legal action also supported by Turkey, Bolivia and Malaysia because, even in the event of a rapid pronouncement of condemnation, will have a more symbolic and diplomatic value than actual, as happened with the even more binding UN resolutions against the occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights by Israel which have never found even partial fulfillment.
War Crimes in Syria, Donbass and Gaza
